Our 5 tips for teaching your kids to tidy up

Our 5 tips for teaching your kids to tidy up

It's the perfect time for spring cleaning! But how do you get your kids to actually want to tidy up their room and neatly put away toys? Here are our 5 tips for motivating your kids to do this task which - admittedly - isn’t the most interesting task in the world for kids:

  1. Breaks are a great way to teach your kids to tidy up
  2. Learn how to tidy up while listening to music
  3. Getting a reward after tidying up
  4. Teach your kids to tidy up while having fun
  5. Organise spaces with appropriate storage

1. Breaks are a great way to teach your kids to tidy up

Short breaks where the kids are just waiting around for something is a great time to fit in a quick tidying session! You could easily use the time between the dreaded TV adverts as an initial tool for teaching your children to tidy up, without feeling like they’re wasting their precious playtime. If they do watch terrestrial TV or Youtube shows with adverts, then you can use every advert between their programs to motivate them to tidy up their rooms or put away their toys.

Advertisements are getting longer and longer, so this is the perfect time for your kids to tidy up their things. With a bit of luck, they'll be in a hurry to finish their chores just in time for the return of their favourite cartoon or film. If not, it doesn't matter - they can either miss the start or finish during the next commercial break.

You can also incorporate quick breaks during reading, a video game or board game session to get your kids to clean their room. If they’re enjoying the activity and are eager enough to get back to it, tidying up should be a quick and easy job for them to complete successfully!

2. Teach your kids how to tidy up while listening to music

Our second tip? Try teaching your kids to tidy their rooms or toys with music playing in the background. Start by choosing a song, imagine a dance routine and introduce this funny ritual every time there’s a need to tidy up. This should get your children excited and motivated as soon as they hear the first notes of the fabulous tidying music.

3. Reward your kids after tidying up

Giving a reward after they've tidied their room and toys can also be a successful way of motivating your children to get the job done. Make it a rule that a trip to the playground, a fun cooking session or a movie is only allowed if the messy room is tidied and all the things are put away. See what happens!

Long term, you can also create task boards that they can fill in according to the little chores they do every day. Setting the dinner table, using the toilet properly or tidying up the room - these are the little tasks that your kids can do in order to get a little reward at the end!

4. Teach your kids to tidy up while having fun

As mentioned above, teaching your children to clean up is also about finding a fun way to do it. In addition to music and dance, you can opt for a game such as clean up the objects according to the colours. What's the goal? Your kids should, for example, tidy up all the red objects, then the blue ones, then the white ones, etc.

Make every tidying up chore a fun little mission for the kids. Whether in the bedroom or the playroom, tell them to park each toy car in the garage, put each doll to sleep in their box or put all the stuffed animals in the same case for the night. Tidying as a game is a great idea to try out with your children!

5. Organise spaces with appropriate storage

In order to motivate and teach your kids to clean up their things, we advise that you organise the rooms (bedroom, living room, playroom,...) with storage boxes or drawers. This will not only optimise storage space but will also make each room more ordered once your children have tidied up their toys.

To be even more organised and avoid losing their things, forgetting them or accidentally swapping their toys, remember to label them with 100% customisable labels . Suitable for all types of objects, they’re easy to attach, they can withstand everyday use and they’ll add a personal and fun touch to each toy.

Personalise toy labels

You can also label any storage box or crate, large or small, with personalised self-adhesive labels. This can also help your toddlers so they know where to put their stuff back in the storage space more easily and quickly.

A successful spring cleaning with personalised stickers

With the help of your kids, make your spring cleaning a roaring success with personalised labels. They can be applied to all kinds of objects, shoes or clothes to prevent your little ones from losing, forgetting or swapping things. They are a life-changer for all parents!

Learn how to clean up objects with custom labels

Tidying up toys is one thing, but why not label them? This will prevent your kids from swapping them with other children's toys and will make it easier and quicker to find them if they are forgotten or lost at the playground, at school or at a friend's house.

Also remember to label all the things your kids use. Spring is coming and so is the beginning of the good times! Balls, water bottles and glasses: label every sports and leisure item and save yourself from future headaches.

Personalised labels for shoes

Tidying up isn't just about items. Whether it's rain boots, trainers or slippers, label your kids’ shoes so they're neatly arranged in pairs and stored in the shoe cupboard. These self-adhesive shoes labels are durable, 100% customisable and prevent the shoes from being lost or accidentally swapped.

Self-adhesive labels for tidying clothes

Spring cleaning is part of the change of season where you’ll be tidying up and sorting your kids' spring wardrobes. Gone are the big sweaters and warm winter clothes: time to unpack and sort through the lighter clothes. Take advantage of this spring tidying up and label your children's jackets, t-shirts and underwear.

Design your clothing labels

Iron-on clothing labels are easy to apply, suitable for sensitive skin and can stay on the clothes for years. Self-adhesive clothing labels  stick on the laundry label, can stay on for several weeks and peel off easily if needed.
